What is Family?
How important is family to you?
To me, family is all-important. These are the people who love you no matter what (even when you spoil a photo by making silly faces). These are the people who tell you honestly what they think...and support you when you go against their advice. These are the people who make you feel you're important and that you belong. It's our family that is the anchor that makes it possible for us to fly.
So what is a family? It begins with parents, brothers, and sisters. If you're lucky, this may extend to grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. But it doesn't end there for we create our families by bringing in more distant relatives and/or people we adopt as relatives. Being a blood relation is nice - but not necessary - to qualify as a member of a family.
Take my situation. My sister and brother-in-law (on the right hand side of the photo) are obviously family. But my second cousin (my grandmother and her grandmother were sisters) and her partner (on the left hand side of the photo) are no less family to us. And so it is that an Irishman with no children has become a grandfather to our half-Japanese, half-Hispanic, and half-African American children.
Now that is family.
The truth is
that family is what you make it.
