How Green Was My Valley...
"...up and down the line that stretched from Time That Was, to Time That Is, and Is Not Yet, raised their hands to show the link, and we found that we were one...."
This quote from the 1941 movie How Green Was My Valley by Richard Llewellyn talks about a concept I believe is important to us all; a sense of belonging and of knowing your heritage and history. And it's important to me that our children learn of my Welsh-coal mining-town upbringing and the camaraderie, support, and shared joys and heartaches of life in these proud, working-class communities.
Don't you think that today's children would have a better understanding and appreciation of how fortunate they are if we helped them create a link to their pasts? Don't you think that helping them feel a sense of belonging to a community increases the importance of the family unit in their eyes? And don't you think these things are important to developing positive values and ethics?
So whatever your heritage, take the time to share it with your children, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. Help create that strong bond that is the core of a close-knit family. Help children link the past, present, and future and understand their place in the timeline.
It may be the most important gift you ever give them...
Help children understand their heritages
and their place in that heritage
so that they can move forward with confidence.
