Enough Already!

When she was little, my beautiful daughter believed in 'happy ever after.' She believed that people were kind and considerate and that life itself was magical.

Today, at ten years old, my beautiful daughter asked me why some people look down on her because of her skin color. I looked into her eyes and saw that, at this tender age, some of life's magic had disappeared because of ignorance and prejudice.

 And I grieved.

So I have a message for those people who continue to believe that people should be judged on the amount of melanin in their skin: Please keep your opinions to yourselves lest, one day, you be judged on the color of your eyes, the amount of wrinkles you have, the girth of your wrist, or some other physical feature that has absolutely no bearing on who you are.

And if you want to continue this discussion with someone, please do so with me and not with my daughter who is being raised to be respectful toward others...even the ignorant!

Prejudice is nonsensical and ignorant

and tears away at the self-esteem and self-worth of innocent children.

Enough already!

Yes they are at times. I just would rather they pick on someone their own size...me. :)

Oh, Rhia. What a disappointment. I am so sorry that your daughter experienced this. It makes me very sad.

Me too. But this is part of her reality. We're just trying to balance that with the way most (non prejudiced) people feel.
