The Wisdom of Pooh
We have a daughter who has inherited a severe mental illness from her biological mother and it breaks our heart to see how difficult life is for her and how some turn their backs on her through ignorance. We sometimes want to yell from the rooftops: 'She's the victim; she's done nothing to deserve this!' And I often think she needs a gentler, more supportive world than ours; a world, for example, like Winnie-the-Pooh's.
As we continue to work with our child, some advice Christopher Robin gave Pooh keeps running through my mind: "Promise me you'll always remember you're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think."
If only we could wave a magic wand and have our daughter believe those words.
You too
are braver than you believe
and stronger than you seem
and smarter than you think.
