Tell Me It's Not So...

Our son started high school today. And so many people have asked us if it's hard to 'let him go.' Here's how I feel about it.

 I'm grateful that we live in a country where teenagers have the luxury of going to school rather than being sent out to work or to fight in wars.

I'm grateful that we live in a country where children can benefit from an education, no matter how rich or poor, functional or dysfunctional their families.

I'm grateful that our son is healthy so can go to school rather than being stuck at home through illness.

I'm grateful that our son doesn't have a disability so goes to school happily without fear of failing or being ridiculed by peers.

I'm grateful that our son is becoming more independent because it suggests we've done at least some things right in raising him.

 Will I worry about him? I'm his mother so that goes without saying. But is it hard to let him go? Not at all; I'm just so grateful that he's exactly where he should be.

 And besides...if he doesn't become independent, who's going to look after me when I'm old?
