Are You Grateful?

We are trying to teach our children to be grateful but, at times, they tend to focus more on what they don't have without seeming to notice all that they have. Seeing this behavior again today has spurred me to rewrite one of my first posts.

Something that impacted me greatly in my travels was realizing how so many people have so little - and how this makes them more resourceful and creative. For example, across continents, children make balls out of discarded rubber bands and they make cars and trucks from empty milk/beer cartons, sticks, and bottle tops. They make whole zoos from stones and sticks and a cardboard box can be so many things that you hit the mother-lode if you find one!

The older boy in this photo had found such a box and hid it from me when I asked if I could take his picture, fearing that I may take his box from him. We in the developed world have so much that I wonder how many of us even noticed the precious box in the photo. And I can't help but think that, perhaps, we'd all be better off if we could learn to be grateful for what we have rather than ungrateful for what we have not.

Be grateful for what you have

rather than ungrateful for what you have not.
