Dear Diary (4)

Holiday Day 4

 Dear Diary:

People's spirit, especially in the face of adversity, never ceases to amaze me. After Hurricane Ike in 2008, many of Galveston's centuries-old oaks were destroyed. But, once more, people rose to the occasion and many had the remains of their trees carved into something meaningful to them. The owners of 1702 Winnie had a tin man and Toto carved (by Jim Phillips of Houston). You may ask why these characters...

...King Vidor, one of the directors of 'The Wizard of Oz' was born in the front downstairs bedroom of 1702 Winnie.

What a fitting tribute to the house's history and to the trees that were lost during the hurricane. And what a great reminder that, though adversity will happen, people's spirits will soar higher.
